About the photographer
Reared on an Illinois farm, Bill Wyatt came to North Dakota in 1968. His photos have graced both covers and inside pages of North Dakota Horizons over the past seven years. He recalls that "the old farm had about 90 acres of timbered floodplain, and a kid tramping around outdoors can develop a pretty young appreciation of Nature."
During WW II, Bill was stationed in China, and attributes that duty to his entrances into photography. "I was fascinated with China, and wanted the folks back home to see what it was like. So I bought a camera, and Argus C-3. But there was a censorship problem, and the film all had to be developed before it was sent out of China."
Laughingly, he recalls that "a lot of my first photos were developed in G.I. issue helmets, using spring water. That's when a person can decide how serious he wants to get about photography.
When they moved to North Dakota (across the line from their current residence in Northern Minnesota), Bill's wife, an avid birder, found that there were "a few folks around that were skeptical of our unusual reports and sightings." Bill decided that the only way to dispel this skepticism was to photograph the bird sightings. "My wife is a highly-talented birder, and if she said she had seen a particular bird, then I decided to do my level best to make sure she had the proof!"
So, what started out as a hobby in China, has phase by phase turned into what Bill calls a "challenge." His files reflect the photographic efforts of a man with interests that span the whole spectrum of the great outdoors, from wild flowers to wild game.
"We love it here in North Dakota. There aren't very many places in the world where a photographer has to be careful with exposures because the air is so clean. In our particular case, North Dakota is a birders and photographers paradise. We don't mind being transplanted here at all."
