House for sale in the North Woods

A nature lover's dream!  Have you ever wished you could sip your morning coffee while looking out your window watching over 140 species of birds eat seeds from your feeders?  Barred owls, woodpeckers, red shouldered and broad-winged hawks are some of the many birds seen from your new window. Bald eagles and ospreys are common to the area, with many nests identified within a 10-mile radius.

Or how about the thrill of knowing you live in an area surrounded by many types of wild life, which include white-tailed deer, black bear, bobcat, raccoons, foxes, coyote and cougars?  It is a photographer's dream!

This house is nestled in an area in northwest Minnesota that has over 400 lakes, two national wild life refuges, 3 state parks and many city parks within 60 miles.

It is an extraordinary house that is situated on 9 acres of a maple/basswood/red oak closed canopy forest. The dwelling itself is ~1700 square feet and has two covered decks with an attached carport of over 1200 square feet.  There are two covered wood storage buildings which can hold 10-11 cords.  All electric wiring is underground and it is two-hundred amp service.  The home utilizes hot water heat with outside boilers which can be both wood and LP gas fueled.  The dwelling is constructed of Red Oak and other woods grown on the property.

Even with all of this wildlife and seclusion, the house is located just 5 miles from a city with a hospital and medical clinics, and 45 miles from a major shopping and medical center in Fargo-Moorhead.  While not on a lake itself, just check this map out to see how many lakes are in the area -- many of them with public access.  Also local to the area is an airport, with an international airport 60 miles away, and access to I-94 just 45 miles away.

There is no other home like it in such a beautiful breathtaking place.  The property will sell fast, so don't delay.  Call and make your appointment to see it today -- by phone at 218-844-5862, 217-433-7771 (cell phone), or by email

Covered with snow during the Minnesota winter.

This shows the dwelling during the summertime.  The home is wheelchair accessible.  There are milkweed plants between the ramp and the side of the dwelling.

Monarch butterflies utilize the milkweed plants to lay their eggs and feed the larvae.  Here is one of the monarch butterflies that hatched in your new milkweed garden.

Here are three shots showing examples of the fall color on the nine acres.

What a nice picture of the bird feeding area in the summer!  The dining room is just inside the double-windows facing the feeding area, providing ideal viewing while eating. Food plots have been planted on the grounds using varieties furnished by the Minnesota Soil Conservation Department to draw birds not usually found in a forest.  There are many fruit bearing plants as well as Spruce and Pine for cover.

The bird bath and watering area (visible above) is shown in more detail here.  The stone surrounds a pool which is only activated in the summer.  There is a smaller bird bath that operates year-round.  A reservoir under the small bath is controlled with a float valve to regulate the water level and a small submersible pump that maintains the waterlevel in the bird bath.  There is a thermostatic control heat element to keep the bird bath from freezing even in severe winter weather.

These pictures were taken of the Bird feeding area early in the morning showing new fallen snow.  There is a chickadee on the three-tube feeder on the left (he was an early bird!) -- shown in the detail shot.

Here is an American Goldfinch taken on the feeder during the springtime.

Here is a Ruby-throated Hummingbird at a window feeder.

The current owners of the home have kept a list of the birds that have seen on the 9 acres during the time they have lived there.  The list totals 148 species, including 26 of the wood warblers of the known 32 species of warblers in Minnesota.

The dining area that overlooks the bird feeding area.  A resident pair of Pileated Woodpeckers come to the suet feeder located 6 feet from the windows.  When the hummingbirds return after spring arrives, they come to the window looking for the feeders that were there last summer.  There have been as many as 20-30 hummers hatched here before migrating.

The house has hot water heat and the boilers, both wood burning and LP gas, are located in a boiler room outside of the dwelling.  The current owners have heated the home with an average of 16 cords of wood annually, harvested from the property.  The decking and covered wood stores 10-11 cords.

The flooring is 3/4" solid oak.

This is a built-in bookcase / curio cabinet located on one wall of the dining room.  The doors are shatter-proof.

Included in the kitchen is a refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, electric cooktop range and corner stainless steel sinks.  There is an abundance of kitchen storage.  Cabinetry was custom-made of red oak.

The Kitchen Island is constructed of solid red oak, maple and cherry wood with a Formica top.  Four electrical outlets at each end of the island provide plenty of power for those kitchen appliances.

This is a 14' by 24' room that was used by the current owners as a photo Gallery.  This room could be utilized in many ways, as a bedroom, family room, music room, etc.  It is naturally lit from ceiling level windows.

Included with the house is a 40' by 75' shed that housed a sawmill and woodworking equipment while the residential building was being constructed.
